Hardness testing of investment castings
Hardness in investment cast materials is their innate trait, essentially their resistance to being indented. This characteristic is gauged by measuring how deep a casting is permanently indented. Varying cast alloys exhibit distinct hardness levels. Enhancing the hardness, and thereby the wear resistance of these castings, can be achieved through heat treatment as per customer requirements.
The hardness of an investment cast component is determined by measuring either the depth or the area of indentation using various testing methods. For precise results, the test area should be as level as possible, and it is advisable to conduct hardness tests on multiple areas of the same component.

Brinell Hardness Test
This traditional method uses a spherical indenter, typically 10 mm in diameter, pressed into the casting surface. The resulting impression determines the Brinell hardness (HB).
Rockwell Hardness Test
Utilizing a bullet-shaped or conical indenter, this test measures resistance to penetration, indicating hardness as a Rockwell scale number (HRC for steel).
Vickers Hardness Test
A diamond pyramid indenter is applied with a specific force, and the diagonals are measured post-testing to calculate hardness using the Vickers formula.
