Stainless Steel Casting Process

The 10-Step Stainless Steel Investment Casting Process

Stainless steel investment casting, or lost wax casting, is the premier method for manufacturing intricate, high-precision components. At Precisionvast, we utilize the Silica Sol investment casting process to achieve superior surface finishes and tight dimensional tolerances.

1. Design & Precision Tooling

The process begins with a detailed CAD design. We engineer high-precision metal molds (tooling) that account for the specific shrinkage rates of stainless steel alloys to ensure final part accuracy.

2. Wax Pattern Injection

High-quality wax is injected into the mold cavity. Once cooled, the wax pattern is a perfect 1:1 replica of the final component. Every pattern undergoes a strict quality check for surface integrity.

3. Tree Assembly (Gating System)

Individual wax patterns are “welded” onto a central wax sprue. This “casting tree” configuration allows for high-volume production and ensures a consistent flow of molten metal during the pouring stage.

4. Advanced Shell Building (Silica Sol Process)

The assembly is repeatedly dipped into a high-grade colloidal silica slurry and coated with refractory sand. Unlike cheaper water glass methods, our silica sol process creates a dense, heat-resistant ceramic shell that yields a much smoother surface finish.

5. Dewaxing & Pre-Heating

The ceramic shell is placed in a steam autoclave or high-temperature oven. The wax melts and drains out (the “lost wax”), leaving a hollow, high-strength ceramic cavity ready for the molten metal.

6. Vacuum-Assisted Pouring

Molten stainless steel, heated to approximately 1600°C, is poured into the pre-heated shells. Pre-heating the shell prevents thermal shock and ensures the metal fills even the thinnest walls and most intricate details.

7. Knockout & Gating Removal

Once the metal has solidified and cooled, the ceramic shell is vibrated or blasted away (knockout). The individual stainless steel parts are then precision-cut from the central sprue.

8. Precision Grinding & Cleaning

Remaining “gates” or “witness marks” are ground flush with the part’s surface. This stage prepares the casting for final finishing.

9. Surface Finishing & Electropolishing

To achieve the desired aesthetic and corrosion resistance, we offer several surface treatments:

  • Shot Blasting/Sand Blasting: For a uniform matte finish.

  • Electropolishing: To enhance hygiene and corrosion resistance (ideal for food/medical grades).

  • Mirror Polishing: For high-end architectural or marine hardware.

10. Rigorous Inspection & Quality Assurance

The final stage involves 100% validation of the components:

  • Dimensional Inspection: Using CMM and digital calipers.

  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Including Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) and X-ray.

  • Spectrometric Analysis: To verify the exact chemical composition of the stainless steel.

Advantages of Stainless Steel Casting

Stainless steel castings offer exceptional resistance to corrosion, making them ideal for use in harsh environments.

They provide great strength and durability, ensuring longevity even under strenuous conditions.

The casting process allows for high precision and versatility in creating complex shapes and intricate designs.

Stainless steel has a naturally appealing finish, which can be easily polished for an enhanced look.

Stainless steel castings withstand high temperatures, making them suitable for applications in high-heat environments.

Disadvantages of Stainless Steel Casting

Stainless steel casting can be more expensive than other metal casting processes due to the material and process complexities.

While durable, stainless steel can be difficult to machine, requiring specialized tools and techniques.

Stainless steel is heavier than materials like aluminum, which might be a disadvantage in applications where weight is a critical factor.

Not all stainless steel alloys are suitable for casting, limiting the range of material options.

Stainless steel can be sensitive to heat treatment, which might affect its mechanical properties if not handled correctly.
